Hunting in West Coast

The West Coast is a stronghold for the alpine species: dense rainforest climbing straight from the valley floors to the tops, with the glacier valleys of South Westland holding some of the country's best free-range tahr and chamois. The river valleys south of Hokitika are known red deer country, while the big southern catchments are classic fly-in territory where helicopter access is part of the trip. The tahr and chamois rut falls through the colder months. This is steep, wet, genuinely demanding country, and West Coast operators are straight up about what a hunt here asks of you.
