Hunting in Wellington

River bending through dense bush hills

The Wellington region's hunting is centred on the Tararua and Remutaka Forest Parks, steep, forested public land that rewards hunters willing to work. Red stag and fallow deer are the core quarry, with sika established in the northern Tararua as the central North Island herd has spread south. Both parks run permit systems, and parts of the Remutaka operate roar ballots, so the paperwork is real even before the climbing starts. The autumn roar is the classic window. It is honest, do-it-yourself flavoured country where a guided operator mostly earns their value through access and local knowledge.
