Hunting in Gisborne

Road bridge crossing a milky green river between bush-clad hills

Gisborne and the East Cape hold some of the North Island's wildest hunting country: the rugged Raukumara Range, the Motu River country, and the forested Waioeka Gorge. Red stag and fallow deer are the core quarry, with sika in the wider central and eastern North Island bush this country connects to. Much of the Raukumara interior is genuine fly-in territory, big, steep and remote, and helicopter access from the Bay of Plenty side is a normal part of hunting it. Access is the defining factor out here, which is exactly where a guided operator changes the trip.
