Hunting in Otago
Otago is high-country hunting: schist tussock ranges, big river valleys, and open tops that make it some of the best free-range red stag country in New Zealand. It is also the fallow stronghold, with the Blue Mountains near Tapanui known for the croak, hunted through a balloted block system when the fallow rut runs in April. Stags roar through late March and April, and chamois and tahr are within reach on the alpine fringe toward the Southern Alps. Most guided hunting here is on private stations and blocks, some of them very large, and a few operators hold public land concessions as well.
