Hunting in Canterbury

Canterbury runs from the braided river plains to the highest peaks of the Southern Alps, and it holds more huntable tahr country than anywhere else in New Zealand. The big east-side catchments, the Rakaia and the Rangitata, are where most free-range bull tahr are taken, and the same country holds chamois. Red stag is hunted on both public land and private stations, and Lake Sumner is a well-known recreational hunting area where aerial operations are excluded. The tahr rut runs late May to mid-July, when bulls carry their winter mane, and the stag roar peaks in early April. These are alpine hunts and the climbing is real, so ask any operator early whether their ground is private, public concession, or both.
