Hunting in Waikato
The Waikato pairs farmland with serious public forest. The Kaimai Range is the accessible local option, Pureora Forest Park is the quality bush hunting, big podocarp forest with a strong red deer reputation, and Mt Pirongia adds country close to town. Red stag and fallow are the main game, with sika in the central North Island bush to the south and east. Stags roar through late March and April, and sika are vocal from late March into May. Guided hunting in the region runs on private land.
