Hunting in Marlborough

Marlborough covers a lot of ground, from the sheltered Sounds to the tussock of Molesworth, New Zealand's largest recreation reserve, where red deer and chamois are hunted through a block-booking system run by the Department of Conservation. The Wairau Valley and its tributaries hold reds and chamois in more classic river-valley country, and fallow are on private ground across the region. Stags roar through late March and April, and the tahr rut runs late May to mid-July in the alpine country to the south.
