Hunting in Manawatū-Whanganui
Manawatū-Whanganui runs from the southern Ruahine Range across the Whanganui River hill country, a big stretch of bush and hill country in the lower central North Island. Red stag and fallow are the main game, with sika well established in the Ruahine. The region also holds one of New Zealand's two wild sambar herds, mostly in the Santoft Forest. Stags roar through late March and April, and fallow groan into May. Guided hunting runs largely on private blocks through the Whanganui back country.
